Center
for NanoCellulosics
The
mission of the Center for NanoCellulosics is to bring nanoscale
science and engineering to research and education in forest resources
and the forest products industry. Developments in nanotechnology
are affording scientists new methods of engineering and characterizing
materials and processes on the molecular scale.
Center
for Watershed Stewardship
The Center's purpose is to create the next generation
of watershed professionals by combining interdisciplinary capabilities
with strong disciplinary bases in a community-oriented context.
The Center's programs include graduate studies in watershed stewardship
and a continuing education program of short-courses for natural
resources professionals and community leaders.
Conservation
Leadership School
If you like the outdoors and would like to learn
more about conserving our forests, wildlife, and water, this program
just might be for you. CLS emphasizes leadership and applying it
to current conservation issues. Students should be 15 to 18 years
old and have a real interest in conservation and the environment.
Forest
Stewardship Program
The Forest Stewardship Program is a voluntary
program to help forestland owners learn how to improve and maintain
the ecological health of their land. You get to decide what you
want to do on your land, and the Forest Stewardship Program links
you with the people who can help you do it correctly! Since 1990,
the program has been funded in all 50 states by the U.S. Department
of Agriculture Forest Service. In Pennsylvania, the Department of
Conservation and Natural Resources Bureau of Forestry administers
the program and provides technical assistance. Our state program
is overseen by a Forest Stewardship steering committee composed
of private landowners, professional resource managers, and representatives
from conservancies, higher education, industry, and government.
Forestland
Management Office
The Penn State Forestland Management
Office oversees more than 8000 acres of land, including the Stone
Valley Forest. These areas provide opportunities for exemplary natural
resource management, education, and demonstration consistent with
the mission of the School of Forest Resources.
Maurice
K. Goddard Chair in Forestry and Environmental Conservation
The Goddard Chair is a unique endowed professorship
at Penn State which emphasizes outreach and public service. The
Goddard Professor seeks to improve natural resource management and
policy by fostering dialogue on important issues among agencies,
industries, and the general public.
Laurel
Haven Conservation Education Center
The Laurel Haven Conservation Education Center
is a 50-acre working forest located in the Bald Eagle Valley, a
few miles north of State College, Pennsylvania. The center, which
is part of the Laurel Haven Tree Farm, is dedicated to wise natural
resource conservation through sustainable forest practices.
Pennsylvania
Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit
The Unit's mission is to conduct interdisciplinary
applied and basic research in fish and wildlife management and contribute
to graduate education. The Unit's research emphasis is on (1) integrating
ecology and management of terrestrial and aquatic habitats, (2)
evaluating the effects of human activities on wildlife, fish, and
their habitats, and (3) providing guidelines for restoring and maintaining
important terrestrial and aquatic communities. Unit personnel contribute
to graduate education by engaging graduate students in research
projects and teaching graduate level courses.
Schatz
Center for Tree Molecular Genetics
The Schatz Center provides funding for research
and education in forest gentics and related technology at University
Park and Mont Alto campuses of Penn State. The Schatz Center's facility
has the capacity to sequence over 100,000 DNA clones per year and
can genotype over 100,000 samples per year.
Silviculture
Research Lab
The Silviculture Research Lab is the center for
innovative, collaborative research on applied forest ecology and
management. The Lab uses both theoretical and applied field research
and outreach to address pressing issues in forestry.
Sustainable
Forestry Partnership
Documents and promotes innovation in sustainable
forestry and integrates this innovation broadly into both policy
and practice.
