Pennsylvania hardwood forest and stream.The Forest Science major provides for the education of foresters at the professional level and is accredited by the Society of American Foresters. It provides the education necessary for students to pursue professional careers in one of the following options:

  1. Forest Biology
  2. Forest Management
  3. Urban Forestry
  4. Watershed Management

This major can help prepare students for forest land management positions in public and private forestry, and may also provide a foundation for graduate study.

Students begin with a sound general education in the sciences and humanities, followed by courses in ecological and managerial principles applied to managing products and services on forested lands. Students may choose supporting technical courses in managerial, biological, or social aspects of forestry.

Foresters are concerned with the availability of sufficient pure water for people and industries, timber for construction, pulpwood for paper production, wildlife and parks for recreation, and trees to beautify landscapes.

For a successful forestry career, several personal qualities are desirable:

  • an ethical concern for natural resources and enjoyment of nature;
  • an analytical mind to cope with complex biological systems and with complex economic, financial, and social problems;
  • creative abilities for solving technological problems;
  • ability to communicate with the public and to supervise employees.
